The Magic of In-person Learning

It’s been far too long since our last in-person class. Let me remind you of the incredible power we’ve discovered in coming together in the same physical space.

Somatic Journeys
Awareness Through Movement® lesson

Not so long ago, the mention of Feldenkrais classes naturally evoked images of us gathered together. We didn’t need to specify “in-person” – it was the natural state of our practice. Then the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our cherished routines, and my last in-person class was way back in the Winter of 2020.

In today’s world, online Feldenkrais classes have opened up new doors, allowing us to connect with students and practitioners from across the globe. It’s been an incredible journey for me, teaching participants from across Canada, the United States, Europe, the UK, and even Africa. These online classes, with their convenience and accessibility, have been a lifeline during trying times.

However, there is an undeniable magic when we are physically present, sharing the same physical space, and embarking on this learning journey together at our dedicated hour each week.

In an in-person class, I have the privilege of observing how you interpret each movement, allowing me to provide personalized guidance that caters to your unique needs. Sometimes I can pause to gently redirect your attention, helping you experience a shift in your understanding of the movement. Occasionally, a fellow student might demonstrate this shift, illuminating the path for us all.

Our class environment itself plays a crucial role. It frees you from the distractions and expectations of your home surroundings. The soft, embracing lighting and the comforting support of our Feldenkrais mats create an atmosphere where you feel secure enough to immerse yourself fully in the present moment. You begin to inhabit the “now” more profoundly.

One of the treasures of our in-person classes has always been the post-class chats. Questions naturally arise, and we engage with each other’s thoughts and queries, finding resonance in our shared experiences. These conversations deepen our understanding, and my responses aim to enrich our self-awareness.

And then there are those precious moments after class, where some of us linger, connecting on different levels. Conversations extend, friendships deepen, and some even head out for a cup of coffee. These informal gatherings have woven an extra layer of community into our Feldenkrais experience, creating bonds that extend far beyond the classroom.

So, as we approach this new season, I extend to you a heartfelt invitation to consider the profound power of being together in the same physical space once more. While online classes have served us admirably, there’s a unique quality to our in-person gatherings – a tangible sense of shared presence, personalized guidance, and a community that has the potential to profoundly enrich our lives.

What is Correct Breathing?

What is correct breathing? The answer is as elusive as ‘What is clever or good talking?’ Our breathing apparatus is a thing to enable us to get enough oxygen; and get enough CO2 or carbon dioxide out of the body…

Happy Hips and Shoulders

“Easy Shoulders and Hips.” It’s not uncommon for discomfort to manifest in both shoulders and hips simultaneously. In our Feldenkrais approach to the body and mind, we see intricate connections. A “shoulder” is more than just a spot on the body; it’s more than a joint. Its position at rest reflects complex connections with various parts of ourselves – connections and habitual tensions that often escape our awareness. It’s through cultivating this awareness that change truly begins.
