Relieve your pain while walking

A Short Lesson for Walking Comfort

For years I have helped hundreds of people find more comfort and ease in walking.

Recently, while working with friends who were campaigning during an election, I heard familiar concerns. Walking door-to-door brought out old pains and limitations. Some noticed discomfort in the hips or knees. Others found that old injuries resurfaced after only a short distance.

They wanted something practical — not a long program, but something brief they could do between rounds of canvassing, later at home, or whenever walking began to feel difficult.

This interested me.

Often we assume that walking problems require more effort, more stretching, stronger muscles, or simply pushing through. Yet many difficulties in walking arise not only from strength or fitness, but from how the whole person is organized while moving.

How do we place weight through the feet?
How do the pelvis, ribs and breathing participate?
Where do the eyes orient?
How do we habitually carry effort?

These questions led me to create a short Feldenkrais lesson designed to bring attention to how walking is organized.

The lesson is simple and brief — about 13 minutes.

Rather than trying to “fix” walking, it invites you to notice how you walk and to explore other possibilities. Sometimes even small changes in organization can make walking feel lighter, easier, or more comfortable.

How to Explore the Lesson

Follow the recording once in full, then notice what stood out for you.

As the lesson becomes familiar, adapt it to suit your own style and available time. Some people enjoy doing it in full, while others borrow particular elements that are especially meaningful for them.

Sometimes new comfort begins with noticing.

Don’t forget to write to me to let me know how this has helped you — and how you have changed it to make it even better for you! (write to: rblack@somaticjourneys.com)
